The Answers:

Q. What are head lice?
A. The head louse (Pediculus capitis) is a small, parasitic insect that lives mainly on the scalp and neck of their human host. Having head lice is very common. They are capable of moving from head to head, thus no one is immune. Lice live by biting the scalp and sucking the blood. The louse life cycle has three stages nit, nymph and adult.

Q. What is a nit?
A. Nits are louse eggs that are barely visible and are firmly glued to the base of the hair shaft. They appear oval and generally brown to yellow in colour. They take about 7 to 10 days to hatch. The empty egg casings are white in colour and resemble dandruff.

Q. What is a nymph?
A. Nymphs are immature lice. The nit hatches into a baby louse called a nymph. It looks like an adult head louse, but is smaller (0.3-1.5mm). Nymphs mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. To live, the nymph must feed on blood.

Q. What is an adult louse?
A. The adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed (2-3mm), has six legs, and is brown to greyish-white. In persons with dark hair, the adult louse will look darker. Females lay nits; they are usually larger than males. An adult louse can live up to 30 days on a person's head. To live, adult lice need to feed on blood. If the louse falls off a person, it dies within 2 days.

Q. Who is susceptible to lice infestation?
A. Anyone who comes in close contact with someone who already has head lice. Children are more susceptible because they are more likely to have close contact in homes, playgrounds, schools, pre-schools and day-care centres. Adults may become infested without being aware of it and can become a source of infestation to others. There is no link between having lice and dirty hair!

Q. How do I know if I have lice?
A. You can tell whether you have head lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs and adults. The presence of adult lice or nymphs confirms positive infestation. Many people with lice will have no symptoms. The LiceSnatcher™ the ideal tool to use to check for lice infestation. When checking the lice are captured in the filter making it very easy to tell if there is an infestation or just a case of dandruff! Other indicators and symptoms that should prompt a lice check are:
  • Fine black powder on pillows. This is lice faeces.
  • Frequent head tickling and itching caused by allergic reactions to bites which can become infected.
  • Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair.
  • Itching, caused by the an allergic reaction to the bites.
  • Irritability.

Q. What can I do to get rid of lice?
A. Follow the LiceSnatcher™™ User Manual and treatment plan. The LiceSnatcher™ gets rid of a lice infestation by interrupting the louse life-cycle using vacuum combing. It removes the adults and any nymphs in the first treatment, then the newly hatched nymphs before they can lay more eggs. By the end of the treatment cycle all eggs are hatched and all the lice are gone.

That's it….works every time, chemical free, no poisons, potions or chemicals -safe to use on the whole family.

Q. Who else should be checked when an infestation is found?
A. Family and friends who may have had close head-to-head contact is vital to prevent re-infestation. Vacuum combing with the LiceSnatcher™ should be used to rapidly detect and identify lice.

Q. What is “Vacuum Combing”?
A. Vacuum Combing is the use of a short stroke combing action across the scalp combined with a powerful suction along the hair length to effectively dislodge and capture (“Snatch”) the lice. The method is to comb on the down stroke about 50mm (2”), tilt the nozzle to release the hair from the comb, bring the nozzle back up the scalp and repeat until all the hair is treated.

To see the Vacuum Combing method in action go to our demonstration video . This combination of combing and airflow is very effective at removing adult lice and nymphs.

Q. Can head lice re-infestation be prevented?
A. Re-infestation shortly after successful treatment can be prevented by treatment of all infested contacts. Use the LiceSnatcher™ to check contacts: your immediate family and other people close to the child. This will stop the infestation rotating around the family.

There is often a random “pool” of infestation with the community. To keep your child lice-free we recommend a periodic (e.g. weekly, typically on a Friday at the end of the school week) lice-check with the LiceSnatcher™. This will identify any new infestation early or verify that the child is lice-free. Any infestations found are treated by continued "vacuum combing" as shown in the LiceSnatcher™ Treatment Plan. By carrying out weekly checks you can be sure your child remains lice free
